The History department was established in 1964. It offers undergraduate courses. The main objective and programme of the department is to highlight regional history in the context of national history. The main thrust of the academic programme of the department has been on social, economic and cultural history. History is no longer regarded as mere chronological narrative, but is considered to be the history of growth, development of society and human civilization. It is of utmost importance that history should be properly understood, interpreted and taught.
The department is promoting the scientific teaching and the study of history with particular emphasis on the archaeological, economic, political, social and religious changes.
